At first, the scenes illustrated by Kristell Rodeira seem anchored in reality, but with a closer look, their strangeness reveals itself. Her approach is playful as she creates a contrast between the innocent delicacy of her visual style and the irony of the subjects she chooses to depict. She likes to think that a “worrying strangeness” emanates from the fantastic and lyrical world portrayed in her work.
Her inspirations, ranging from a wide variety of mediums, from scientific illustration to comic books (Charles Burns, Brecht Evens…), of artists like the Icinori duo, or the pictorial work of Ron Mueck and David Hockney, as well as fairy tales and animation (Lewis Caroll, Miyazaki…), have deeply influenced her visual imagery.
